Calorie Calculator – Estimate Your Daily Calorie Needs
A Calorie Calculator helps you estimate how many calories your body may need each day based on your age, gender, height, weight, and activity level. Understanding your daily calorie needs can help you make more informed decisions about your eating habits, weight management, and fitness routine.
This calculator estimates your daily calories for maintaining your current weight and also provides example calorie targets for weight loss and weight gain. The results are estimates rather than exact measurements of your body’s energy requirements.
How to Use the Calorie Calculator
Follow these steps to calculate your estimated daily calorie needs.
Select your gender – Choose male or female.
Enter your age – Provide your age in years.
Enter your height – Enter your height in centimetres.
Enter your weight – Enter your current weight in kilograms.
Choose your activity level – Select the option that best matches your usual exercise and physical activity.
Click Calculate – The calculator will display your estimated daily calorie needs and three calorie estimates for different weight goals.
Click Reset – Clear all the entries to perform another calculation.
Enter accurate information to get a more useful estimate. The calculator accepts ages from 1 to 120 years, heights from 50 to 250 cm, and weights from 10 to 300 kg.
Understanding Your Calorie Calculator Results
The calculator displays your estimated daily calorie needs along with three goal-based calorie figures.
Estimated Daily Calorie Needs
This is the estimated number of calories your body uses each day based on your calculated Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and selected activity level. It serves as a rough maintenance calorie estimate.
Weight Loss Calories
The calculator subtracts 500 calories from your estimated maintenance needs. However, it does not display a result below 1,200 calories per day. This is a fixed rule in the calculator, not a personalised assessment of the minimum calories you need.
Maintain Calories
This figure is the same as your estimated daily calorie needs. It represents a starting estimate for maintaining your current weight.
Weight Gain Calories
The calculator adds 300 calories to your estimated maintenance needs. This provides an example of a higher-calorie intake that may support weight gain, although actual results depend on individual circumstances.
How Daily Calorie Needs Are Calculated
The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate BMR. BMR represents the energy your body uses at rest to support essential functions such as breathing, circulation, and temperature regulation.
For males:
BMR = (10 × Weight) + (6.25 × Height) − (5 × Age) + 5
For females:
BMR = (10 × Weight) + (6.25 × Height) − (5 × Age) − 161
In these formulas, weight is measured in kilograms, height in centimetres, and age in years.
After calculating BMR, the calculator multiplies it by an activity factor to estimate daily calorie needs.
Daily Calories = BMR × Activity Factor
The BMR and maintenance calorie results are rounded to whole numbers.
Activity Levels Used in the Calculator
Your physical activity affects how much energy you use throughout the day. Select the activity level that most closely reflects your usual routine.
| Activity level | Description | Factor |
|---|---|---|
| Sedentary | Little or no exercise | 1.2 |
| Lightly Active | Exercise 1–3 days per week | 1.375 |
| Moderately Active | Exercise 3–5 days per week | 1.55 |
| Very Active | Exercise 6–7 days per week | 1.725 |
| Extra Active | Hard exercise or a physically demanding job | 1.9 |
These factors are general estimates. Your actual energy expenditure may differ depending on your daily movement, exercise intensity, body composition, and other individual factors.
Example of Daily Calorie Calculation
Suppose your estimated maintenance requirement is 2,200 calories per day. The calculator would produce the following figures.
| Goal | Calculation | Estimated calories |
|---|---|---|
| Weight loss | 2,200 − 500 | 1,700 kcal/day |
| Weight maintenance | 2,200 | 2,200 kcal/day |
| Weight gain | 2,200 + 300 | 2,500 kcal/day |
This is an illustrative example, not a personal recommendation. Your actual results will depend on the details you enter into the calculator.
How to Use Calorie Estimates for Weight Management
Calorie estimates can help you understand the relationship between energy intake and energy use. However, the most suitable approach depends on your health, age, activity, nutritional needs, and personal goals.
For weight loss: A calorie deficit may support gradual weight loss, but an appropriate target varies from person to person.
For weight maintenance: Eating an amount close to your actual daily energy expenditure can help maintain weight over time.
For weight gain: A suitable calorie surplus, combined with balanced nutrition and appropriate exercise, may support weight gain.
Your body weight will not necessarily change in a predictable way every day. Water retention, digestion, activity changes, and other factors can affect short-term measurements.
Important Limitations of This Calculator
This calculator provides general estimates and does not measure your metabolism directly. Its results depend on the accuracy of your information and the assumptions used in the equations.
The weight-loss and weight-gain figures are generated using fixed adjustments of minus 500 and plus 300 calories. The calculator does not assess whether those targets are appropriate for your age, health, or nutritional requirements. Its 1,200-calorie lower limit for the weight-loss estimate should not be treated as a universally safe minimum.
Children, teenagers, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, and people with specific medical or nutritional needs may require different guidance. Consider consulting a qualified healthcare professional or registered dietitian before making significant changes to your calorie intake.
Use the results as a starting point for understanding your daily energy needs, rather than as a guaranteed target or a substitute for personalised nutrition advice.
