BMR is an estimate of the calories your body may need for basic functions at rest. Daily calorie needs are estimated using your selected activity level.

BMR Calculator – Estimate Your Daily Calorie Needs

A BMR Calculator helps you estimate how many calories your body needs to perform basic functions while at rest. These functions include breathing, blood circulation, maintaining body temperature, and supporting essential organs. Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is an estimate of the energy your body uses even when you are not physically active.

This calculator also estimates your daily calorie needs based on your activity level. You can use the results as a starting point for understanding your energy requirements and planning your nutrition or fitness routine.

How to Use the BMR Calculator

Follow these simple steps to calculate your BMR and estimated daily calorie needs.

  1. Select your gender – Choose male or female.

  2. Enter your age – Provide your age in years.

  3. Enter your height – Add your height in centimetres.

  4. Enter your weight – Enter your weight in kilograms.

  5. Choose your activity level – Select the option that best matches your usual physical activity.

  6. Click Calculate – The calculator will display your estimated BMR and daily calorie needs.

  7. Click Reset – Use this button to clear your entries and start a new calculation.

Make sure all details are entered within the calculator’s accepted ranges to receive a result.

What the Calculator Results Mean

The calculator displays two main results.

Estimated BMR

Your BMR is the estimated number of calories your body uses each day at rest to maintain essential bodily functions. It is not the same as the total calories you need throughout the day.

Daily Calories

This result estimates your daily energy needs by multiplying your BMR by an activity factor. It provides a rough indication of how many calories you may need to maintain your current weight, although actual needs can vary.

The selected activity level is also displayed so you can check which option was used in the calculation.

BMR Calculation Formula

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, a commonly used formula for estimating basal metabolic rate in adults.

For males:

BMR = (10 × Weight) + (6.25 × Height) − (5 × Age) + 5

For females:

BMR = (10 × Weight) + (6.25 × Height) − (5 × Age) − 161

In these formulas:

  • Weight is measured in kilograms.

  • Height is measured in centimetres.

  • Age is measured in years.

  • BMR is expressed in kilocalories per day, commonly written as kcal/day.

The calculator rounds the BMR result to the nearest whole number.

Activity Levels and Daily Calorie Calculation

Your body uses additional energy for movement, exercise, work, and everyday activities. The calculator applies an activity multiplier to estimate your daily calorie needs.

Activity levelActivity factor
Sedentary – Little or no exercise1.2
Lightly Active – Exercise 1–3 days per week1.375
Moderately Active – Exercise 3–5 days per week1.55
Very Active – Exercise 6–7 days per week1.725
Extra Active – Hard exercise or a physically demanding job1.9

The calculation is:

Daily Calories = BMR × Activity Factor

For example, if your estimated BMR is 1,500 kcal/day and you select the moderately active level, the estimated daily calorie requirement would be:

1,500 × 1.55 = 2,325 kcal/day

This is only an example. Your actual result will depend on the personal details and activity level you enter.

BMR vs Daily Calorie Needs

BMR and daily calorie needs are related, but they do not mean the same thing.

BMR estimates the energy required for essential functions at rest. Daily calorie needs include that resting energy requirement along with the energy used for physical activity and other daily movements.

For this reason, your daily calorie estimate will generally be higher than your BMR. The activity multiplier provides a convenient estimate, but it cannot account perfectly for every person’s lifestyle, metabolism, or exercise routine.

How BMR Can Help With Fitness Planning

Knowing your estimated BMR can help you better understand your body’s basic energy requirements. When considered alongside your activity level, it can provide a starting point for general nutrition and fitness planning.

  • Weight management: Use your estimated daily calorie needs as a starting reference when reviewing your eating habits.

  • Fitness planning: Understand why your energy requirements may change as your activity level changes.

  • Nutrition awareness: Learn the difference between resting energy needs and total daily energy expenditure.

  • Progress monitoring: Recalculate your estimate when your age, height, weight, or usual activity details change.

Remember that a calorie estimate is not a complete diet plan. Nutritional needs also depend on factors such as health, body composition, individual goals, and changes in physical activity.

Important Information About BMR Estimates

This calculator provides an estimate rather than a direct measurement of your metabolism. Its results depend on the accuracy of the information you enter and the assumptions built into the formula.

The daily calorie result uses a general activity multiplier. Your actual energy expenditure may be higher or lower depending on your routine and individual circumstances. The calculator is intended for general informational use and should not replace personalised advice from a qualified healthcare professional or registered dietitian.

Use the results as a guide, not as a guaranteed calorie target or a medical assessment.
